LIVE with HEART

I had the great pleasure to do my first Helping Hearts photography session in Squamish, B.C this month. Helping Hearts (www.helping-hearts.ca) is comprised of professional photographers from across Canada, providing free photography services to families with a child (under 16) who is suffering from a life altering illness and/or disability. The sun was shining for our session at Shannon Falls, which was inspired by Emilio Razanno who has been overcoming medical challenges since the day he was born.. His loving family of five consists of three boys; Marcus age 12, Emilio age 8, Evann 15months and their wonderful parents Pam and Enzo.

As an infant,Emilio was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and underwent three open-heart surgeries and countless trips to the hospital for treatment. His deafness was diagnosed when he was 18 months old and suffered moderate brain damage that resulted from a stroke that followed one of his early surgeries. He has epilepsy which causes spike and wave episodes in the brain. Emilio's Mother, Pam says he has many diagnoses and in spite of all of his challenges and hurdles Emilio continues to move forward not knowing any different in life. Marcus and Emilio are just amazing big brothers to their youngest brother Evann, with so much care and compassion their parents couldn't be more proud of them.

Emilio had a smile on his face the entire photography session. He had so much energy and love for life. You can tell that he doesn't take one day for granted. The scratches on his knees were proof of this! He was picking up logs, jumping off stairs, skipping rocks and constantly showing love and respect to his entire family.

Healthy or not, you never know when life can be taken away from you. A note to parents: every day is a blessing with our family, so tonight when you go to bed kiss your babies goodnight.

All rights reservedI am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It's like this......When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip - to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting.After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, "Welcome to Holland.""Holland?!?" you say. "What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I'm supposed to be in Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy."But there's been a change in the flight plan. They've landed in Holland and there you must stay.The important thing is that they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It's just a different place.So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.It's just a different place. It's slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you've been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around.... and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills....and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy... and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say "Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned."And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away... because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss.But... if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things ... about Holland.

My Favorite All Canadian Wedding

Over my five years of photographing weddings in Canada and Europe, one particular wedding still resonates with me. The Genevieve Lemieux and Len Bijoux wedding in Stewart, B.C Canada.

Far away from city lights, noisy traffic and cell phone reception, lies a fishing lodge tucked away in B.C's pristine wilderness. The backdrop for this summer wedding was a glacier mountain with lush green trees and waterfalls running into the Portland Canal; which separates southeastern Alaska and B.C. The Father and Mother of the bride built this lodge which includes cabins, running water, electricity and a beautiful mile long dock where the couple exchanged their vows. To name a few of the exquisite foods enjoyed by guests were hundreds of fresh mussels, salmon and clam chowder soup.

So much work was involved in getting their 60+ guests to this remote destination. Shuttles from Stewart with every type of boat imaginable! SeaDoo, sail boat, speed boat, dinghy. Some guests were lucky to see porpoises jumping in front of their boat and spotted bears in the nearby forest.

Right after they said their vows, the newlyweds put on their gum boots and jumped on a SeaDoo heading towards our first photo shoot destination; a waterfall where Len proposed to Gen. My husband and I jumped in a boat to chase them down the canal, my husband steered while I used my long lens to capture their free spirited souls skipping across the water.

At the end of the night, the newlyweds had a surprise coming their way! Their loved ones actually built a honeymoon suite in the forest. But this was no ordinary 5 star hotel room. It was a honeymoon suite 30 ft in the air!! They built a tree house in between a cedar tree that split in two about 25 ft up. They even had a balcony!

To end the festivities with a splash, a few brave people jumped into the freezing glacier water the next morning! I couldn't because I was on camera duty.. that was my excuse anyways.

The sun was shining for the Bijoux wedding . A magical event, never to be forgotten. Did I mention how much I love my job!!

It was fate.. Christine and Miguel ran into eachother in Vegas, waiting to check-in to Caesar's palace. They both recognized one another from Harvard Business School and later crossed paths on university campus. They both work and live in the US. They got married in Portugal because Miguel is Portuguese and most of his family is here. The ceremony took place at the Coimbra University Chapel. Coimbra University is the oldest in Portugal and one of the oldest universities in continuous operation in Europe and the world. Their reception was at the very charming and romantic hotel Quinta das Lagrimas. http://www.wonderfulland.com/wonder2006/hotel/lagrimas/indexhotel.htm#thehouse This place has history dating back to the 14th century. The light rain, added mystery and mood to the later part of the evening and didn't ruin any of the fun!!! It was such a pleasure working with Christine and Miguel and I hope to come see you in NYC in the future!

I recently photographed a lovely couple, Ashton and Fernando Calvario at the Sheraton Algarve in Portugal. It was a warm, romantic evening and we took photos as the sun was setting on the hills and on the beach. They just moved here from South Africa. We all had so much fun! Some of my favorite photos was the setting sun through the pine trees. I am sure when I move back to Vancouver next year, there will be plenty of opportunities to take similar photos, especially in Whistler and Squamish. Looking forward to that!

Louise and Christian's Wedding

English couple, Canadian photographer, getting married in Portugal. Louise and Chris and their guests were a pleasure to photograph. As Chris mentioned several times during the night, Louise just looked stunning as a bride. The love they have for each other could be felt and really came through in the photos. Trash The Dress

What isTrash the dress?? (also known as fearless bridal or rock the frock) is a style ofwedding photography that contrasts elegant clothing with an environment in which it is out of place. It is generally shot in the style of fashion and glamour photography. The trend started about a decade ago, and has been gaining popularity. It may be done as an additional shoot after the wedding, almost as a declaration that the wedding is done and the dress will not be used again. It is seen as an alternative to storing the dress away, never to be seen again.

I tried my first Trash the Dress session with Tracey Dabrowski in September. Even 7 years after her wedding day, she pulled it out and it fit perfectly!! Even after 2 children! Here are my favorite photos of the shoot. Some are simply bridal photos and some are dress trashing dirty and some are the works of photoshop. Enjoy!!!You may click on the image to view larger.

I've known Jen since Elementary school days in Richmond, B.C. Jen and Tim had a destination wedding in Cuba and followed it with a big party at home to celebrate! It was a blast taking pictures at their wedding celebration and seeing a few familiar faces from the past. Now this is a couple that knows how to party!!
